Locusts & Honey - Matt Choboter

Locusts & Honey

Debut release of Australian-Canadian Duo, saxophonist Calum Builder and pianist Matt Choboter.

A labour of kindred friendship (developing out of post- graduate studies together at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen) this work, recorded during the 2020 lockdown, harkens the emergence of a new period of immense expressive and aesthetic change. Here, it is as if they are holding on to the last vestiges of past musical selves. This work simply would not exist in any other time pocket and we are thankful for its release.

Shifting between sublime ambience and seething spirit these nine improvisations weave between the cracks of avant-jazz, experimental and contemporary classical. Locusts and Honey encompasses a tension of both a fervent frenzy and contemplative meditation.

Released on ILK Music.

“This album is a faithful reflection of the stressful times of the lockdowns, and most likely would not exist in any other time pocket. Locusts and Honey offers a thoughtful, contemplative meditation about the perils of modern times, in which we can experience – or even choose – the biblical plague of the locusts but also the joy of tasting honey.”

— Eyal Hareuveni (Salt Peanuts)
